Nursing leaders have met recently to discuss the details of the proposed new nursing act that will be re-filed in the 17th Congress.
The Technical Working Group, led by Board of Nursing member Carie Dumlao, reviewed the provisions of the proposed bill in a meeting held at UP College of Nursing, Manila on January 18, 2017.
The new Comprehensive Nursing Law had passed Senate and House of Representatives last year, but it was vetoed by former President Benigno Aquino III.
Ang Nars Partylist, who were represented in the committee by ex-Congresswoman Leah Paquiz, said that they ‘safeguarded the purest intention of the Comprehensive Nursing Law authored by Rep. Paquiz during 16th Congress’ by fighting for inclusion of the following provisions in the draft:
1. Salary Grade 15 as entry level for both government and PRIVATE institutions.
2. Removal of the MANDATORY membership to any nursing organization as requirement prior to Employment and prior to Advanced Practice Nursing.
3. Maximum of 1:12 nurse patient ratio in the general ward.
“This draft will be presented to the next Senate Committee Hearing as it is the version most beneficial to all Filipino Nurses and to public health,” Ang Nars posted online.
The Technical Working Group included Board of Nursing members, PRC Commissioner Angeline Chiaco, PNA president Paulita Cruz and governor Gloria Almariego, UP College of Nursing Dean Lourdes Marie Tejero, RENAP president Raquel Tejada and other nursing leaders.
